Hate Crime Champions is a new innovating and proactive volunteering project positioned at Northumbria University’s Student’s Union, Newcastle City Centre.

Ran by a diverse group of student volunteers, Student Hate Crime Champions launches in September 2019 with the goal of raising awareness about hate crime, providing advice and support to victims of hate crime and just being there to offer a supportive hand.

In 2018, Cohesion Security officer Melanie Costello introduced the project into Northumbria University, making it the FIRST AND ONLY UNIVERSITY IN THE UK to have such an initiative. Several of the trained students got together and decided to make the project into a society, with the aim of getting more students trained and recognised, as well as providing the needed support, advice and awareness surrounding hate crime.

Student Hate Crime Champions is a respectful, diverse project/society that encourages students from all backgrounds to join us as members/volunteers, take part in our recognition scheme and become a member of the prevention family. The society also promotes positive and stimulating conversation about diverse topics and we welcome anybody who wishes to aid in preventing hate crime on our campus by tackling the viewpoints and issues students may face.

We are working closely with several partners to ensure that: our community (students and public alike) receive the best possible service from us, all of our members are trained professionally to deliver excellent and accurate advice to victims of hate crime and to spread the message throughout Newcastle – ‘Love not Fear! No hate here’!

A massive thank you to: Northumbria Police, FZN Radio, Northumbria Student’s Union and Northumbria University.
